Lift Weights to Lower Stress

Research and real-world experience conclusively show that lifting weights and other forms of resistance training such as bodyweight or band exercises train a lot more than just your biceps with many beneficial psychological and emotional effects reported.

For physical training is of some value, but godliness has value for all things, holding promise for both the present life and the life to come
— 1 Timothy 4:8

While this verse is a reminder that fitness must be paired with spiritual growth (as with any area of life in the Christian walk), strength training has many beneficial psychological and emotional effects. This may take the form of weight training, bodyweight exercises or band resistance.

Strength training can…

  • Relieve stress: As well as providing a welcome mental break from the challenges of the day your workouts can be a powerful tool in battling anxiety and depression. I personally never feel happier and more relaxed than after a successful workout (well, maybe a close second to taking Communion if I am being honest), which has ensured exercise keeps pride of place in my stress management toolbox.

  • Provide structure in your life: Scheduling gym sessions requires an extra degree of time management and this often has a flow-on effect into the rest of your life including your Christian walk. Arnie readily credits his later success in movies, business and politics to the discipline and dedication developed through his years of bodybuilding training.
